KHC Visits Livingston, a New Kentucky Trail Town

Trail Town in the Making: Livingston

By Anne Grove

On Wednesday, June 5, 2013, Ginny Grulke, Executive Director of the Kentucky Horse Council and I went to Livingston with Elaine Wilson and her assistant, Seth Wheat. While there, Ginny and Elaine assessed the trail town for horse safety and helped brainstorm ideas to create this small town into an economically profitable trail town. The town already had a great start on building interest and community involvement, but more still needs to be done.

The exit we took off of the highway was very scenic and would make a great precursor to the actual trails at Livingston. First, we looked at an old school that was being renovated into the new visitor center for the trail head. The school, which had been built in the 1920’s and was closed in the mid-90’s, has had a lot of work done on it already. Only one room has been completed, but there are more ideas to fill the many rooms. One thought was to transform an old classroom into a place for kids to interact and play. There was also the idea to make one room a dedication to the building and its use as a school in earlier years. The room would be filled with pictures of graduated classes and relics from the past. The school is very significant to many of the town’s people, seeing as many of them attended the school themselves. The idea of turning it into a bed and breakfast with a cafeteria/dining area for trail visitors seemed popular, but there is much more on the to-do list before that stage.

The trails are multi-purpose, so there was a concern for the horseback riders and their horses. A nice clearing was made, complete with hitching posts, for horses to be tied at while their riders are busy checking in, eating, or some other activity that occupies their time. A system was thought of, where each horse is assigned a numbered spot on the hitching post, and if the horse acts up, there will be a cell phone number listed with that spot and horse, and the owner would be called immediately. There is still some thought going in to the watering aspect of the area. Trailer parking is also being put into consideration. There currently is not a lot of room for trailers to park, but there is a small parking lot and some more land in that area will be renovated for trailers.

Livingston is going to get a great chance to advertise when KET comes to film their town to shed light on highlights in Kentucky. This is a great opportunity for Livingston to show the great tourism aspect of their town.
