Feeding Confiscated Horses

The Kentucky Horse Council provides feed for starving Kentucky horses when they have been legally confiscated as evidence in a neglect case and in situations where the county has obtained a court order to feed a herd in place as part of an ongoing investigation.  SoHo funds are used to purchase hay as the primary source of nutrients for re-feeding starving horses in accordance with the AAEP Re-Feeding Guidelines.

Through SoHo, KHC provides hay on behalf of the prosecuting county in the short term while long term feed and care arrangements are made.   In some instances breed organizations may provide funding for the feeding and care of neglected horses.  In cases involving more than 12 horses the county is encouraged to apply for an ASPCA grant to provide feed and care longer term for affected horses.

Once alternate funds for purchasing hay and other feed have been secured the Kentucky Horse Council steps back.

SoHo funds* are paid directly to the hay supplier and at the request of the county officials involved with the case.

*Hay purchases are dependent upon the availability of SoHo Funds.
