This survey is critical to the future development of the horse industry in Kentucky, because it will estimate the total number of horses in the Commonweath of all breeds, in each county, of all types of uses. A comprehensive study such as this has not been done for 30 years.
The University of Kentucky is implementing the survey, using the National Ag Statistical Services to collect the data around the state. The horse count data will be supplemented by visits to horse shows, trail rides and races by UK personnel and students, to collect the economic impact of these activities.
Funding of the KY Equine Survey
The survey is funded by both a federal program managed by UK ($100,000) and a grant through the Governor's Office of Agriculture Policy (GOAP) from the Agriculture Development Fund ($300,000). This GOAP grant was awarded to the Kentucky Horse Council for use SOLELY for study purposes.
The GOAP grant specifies that $100,000 of the grant must be matched by industry donations. Donations from the industry - both equine associations and individuals - are being collected March, 2012 through September 1, 2012.
How You Can Help
We are asking that both associations and individual owners of horses donate in some way to the survey. These survey results will help Kentucky's equine industry, including all those involved: Those who compete in the show ring, those who are involved in the Thoroughbred industry and those who trail ride. Where our horses are in the state, how they are used, and how many there are will provide figures to develop increased opportunities for riding, competing, racing, breeding, training and boarding.
