Sustainable Trail Design Classes
Building sustainable trails means that the maintenance to keep them in good shape is minimal. The Kentucky Horse Council offers a class in the basics of Trail Design for anyone who would like to know more about the subject. It is one day in length and contains both classroom and outdoor, hands-on activities.
The class covers trail design, construction and maintenance.
The design portion is related to discussion about grade recommendations, the importance of loops, recommended distances for the different intended users, recommended trail widths, heights, etc.
The construction portion is related to what types of tools and equipment are viable options, what kind of materials are options for various applications, etc.
The maintenance portion is related to what can be done to address trail degradation issues such as erosion, heavy traffic, tree and bush trimming, etc.
There is also a lot of discussion about the difference between public and private lands when it comes to trails.
