The Kentucky Horse Council’s “Ride Kentucky Trails Program”
Recreational riding is a refreshing way to spend your free time. Pleasure riding allows you to spend quality time with your family, your friends, and your horse.
Riding is a relaxing activity that promotes physical health as well as personal reflection. What better way to get away from life’s troubles than a leisurely horseback ride through Kentucky’s magnificent countryside!
As Kentucky’s trail system is used, it requires some attention to keep the trails in good working order for all users. The Ride Kentucky Trails Program is an exciting way to meet new people who love the outdoors by working on maintenance, restoration, and new trail construction projects together. Come, feel the pride of accomplishment when you take ownership in the preservation of Kentucky’s trails.
The Kentucky Horse Council Ride Kentucky Trails Program is a saddle-log program, in which members earn rewards and recognition for riding or driving their horses on Kentucky’s vast trail system. As a Ride Kentucky Trails member you are one of the KHC’s best representatives, promoting the use and preservation of Kentucky ’s trails system.
When riders enroll in the KHC’s Ride Kentucky Trails Program, they receive an official time log and a certificate of enrollment. Riders record each hour spent riding or driving their horse on Kentucky trails and through their volunteer hours earned by participating in designated trail maintenance, restoration, or construction projects. As participants reach the various achievement levels—from 100 to 10,000 hours—KHC records their riding, driving, or volunteer hours and rewards them for their accomplishments. There are year end high point awards that are presented at the KHC annual meeting in November of each year.
There is no time limit for riders to achieve their hours, as long as their KHC membership remains active.
How To Join KHC’s Ride Kentucky Trails Program
- Become a member of KHC. Keep your membership active for the entire time you record hours toward a recognition level.
- Ride or drive a horse on Kentucky trails. (Competitive events DO NOT count toward hour accumulation)
- Volunteer for KHC sponsored trail maintenance, restoration, and construction projects.
- Maintain a separate time log on each horse you ride or drive.
- Keep track of the time (one hour for each hour actually spent riding, driving, or volunteering) in your official KHC’s Ride Kentucky Trails Program Time Log. All time logged is on a one horse/one rider basis, and on the honors system.
- Earn bonus hours by riding KHC designated trails (KHC designated trails change each month, see KHC website for monthly location) located throughout the state. For every hour you spend riding or driving on a KHC specified trail, you earn double hours. That's two hours of credit for every hour ridden!
- Also earn bonus hours by volunteering on KHC authorized work days on trail construction, restoration, and maintenance projects at specified trail locations. One hour volunteer time counts as two hours in the saddle! (Travel time to and from the project does not count).
- Your official KHC’s Ride Kentucky Trails Program Time Log submitted to KHC must be postmarked by October 1 of the current year to be considered for the year end awards.
- When you have reached an achievement level, send your official KHC’s Ride Kentucky Trails Program Time Log recording your accumulated hours to the KHC. The council will send you an award based on the number of hours you have accumulated. High Point Awards will be presented at the KHC annual meeting in November of each year. There are separate divisions for adult and youth participants.
